Querl Dox (Brainiac 5)
Querl Dox, alias Brainiac 5, is an iconic member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Legion of Super-Heroes (often just called The Legion by fans) is a DC Comics IP, focusing on a superhero
team from the 30th/31st century. This team first debuted in April of 1958 in Adventure Comics issue #247, and for a long time had close ties with the Superboy comics of the same time, with
Superboy (Clark) not only being a core member of the group, but also being the inspiration behind their formation in the future (there's a lot of weird time-travel shit with this team).
The Legion is made up of a variety of teens all with some sort of special - and often times wacky - ability or power. And let me just say this, they run this team like the damn Navy.
While Brainy's (canon nickname given to him by his team members) origin story has jumped around a bit, most fans of the Legion and Brainiac 5 stick to his original origin, that of him hailing
from the planet Colu and being the descendant of the well known Superman villain, Brainiac.
In Brainy's first appearance/debut in Action Comics issue #276 in May 1961, one of the
first things he proclaims is his dedication to being nothing like his predecessor, and rather committing himself to fighting for good.
He is accepted onto the team due to his "12th level intellect" which makes him a great strategist and most of all, the leading inventor of the team. He is the inventor of the Legion's original flight belts, and later, iconic Legion flight rings.
He is also established in that same debut appearance as a love interest of Supergirl, and to this day he is one of the most iconic love interests of Kara. Little tidbit here, their ship name is KaraDox.
Brainy's personality is probably as you'd expect with the "super smart one" character archetype. He is very confident and sometimes even cocky in his intelligence. He's fully aware that he is the
smartest in the room and takes great pride in it. However, while he can be full of sass and wit, he is still deeply caring of his fellow legionnaires (especially Kara) and dedicated to being
helpful to others. His personality placements are INTP, with a 5w4 Enneagram.
Why I Love This Guy
I began reading the Legion of Super-Heroes comics around mid-to-late June of 2026, soon after the announcement on Twitter from comic writer
Joshua Williamson that a new Legion comic would be coming later in 2026. As it turned out, quite a few of my close mutuals and general people I followed on the site were huge fans of the team,
and despite there only being like 20 Legion fans in all, they were raising a lot of hype around this announcement. This inspired me and quite a few others on the comics side of Twitter to
start reading their comics or watch their beloved 2000s cartoon. Like I'm telling y'all, these fans were talking about the Legion like they personally had cured their grandma's cancer and
gave them a million dollars on the street. As many fans recommended, I and others began our Legion reading journey with the Legion Archives. These are a series of volumes that collect all
Legion of Super-Heroes main and related stories from 1958 to 1991. This is where I'll say that I'd recommend having an open mind or just being prepared when reading older comics, because while
I personally find them to be overall mostly quite charming, they are very much a product of their time.
Now, despite all of this I've just talked about, I was actually introduced to the character of Brainiac 5 wayyy before any of this, primarily in two ways. The first was through the original 1986
run of Booster Gold (another one of my favorite heroes) in issue #8 where Booster fought some of the Legion members, Brainy being one of these members. If I remember correctly, I believe it was
because Booster had stolen the Legion flight ring from the superhero museum of his time in the future so he could be a hero in the past, and the Legion of course were coming to get on his ass for
that. At this time, I didn't know shit about the Legion and was just confused as hell on who the hell all these weird looking guys were, but I was having fun! Also at the time I didn't really pay
any of them much mind, not until my second introduction to Brainy came through a Twitter account I had started following. This account was run by a huge Supergirl fan, and as such they were also
a huge Brainiac 5 fan and KaraDox shipper. It was here that my true first impression of Brainy was formed, specifically through a silly little edit they had made of Brainiac 5 to the track
"Intelligence" by is0kenny. Long story short, this little edit really caught my attention for some reason. So much so, that finally when June 2026 came around and I finally started
reading the Legion, I was just waiting for Brainy to show up and I already had a feeling I was gonna like him.
And man did I! Where do I even begin on my love for this character. In all honesty I still have yet to scratch the surface on Brainy's character and all his appearances, and yet I already love
him so much. I would say a lot of this love for him comes from how much I deeply relate to him. Funnily enough, when I was going about preparing this shrine and decided on including his
MBTI and Enneagram type, I was shocked to find out that we had the same Enneagram and partially MBTI.
Brainy is someone who is fairly introverted, highly observant, and values knowledge. Based off this, the common assumption is that people such as this tend to be cold, disconnected, and even
asocial. And this is exactly how both Brainy and myself have been perceived at times. However despite this assumption, both of us are really caring people who love to be helpful (particularly
when it comes to our knowledge), and enjoy making genuine connections. Tapping into emotions and feelings, and sharing them at that, is the hard part. Honestly, it was actually Brainy that
helped me to realize all this about myself. Of course I've always known that I was someone who deeply valued knowledge and enjoyed researching and learning just for the sake of it. As well, I've
been aware for a long time that making friends or strong connections with people is hard as hell and like pulling teeth for me. And yet, I was always in denial that I'm someone who struggles with
my emotions. I don't know how to explain it, but I thought that if I admitted to this, I'd be falling into the stereotype of such people being asocial and detached. I didn't want to subscribe
to such a stereotype because it often adds to the alienation and isolation people such as myself already often deal with.
And then there was Brainy. Literally upon his first introduction, it all just clicked. Here was this character who, for all intents and purposes, I fully expected to fall into that archetype of
"super intelligent character who is too awkward/detached to make connections and is only really there to be the smart guy and
solve everything." But he didn't. Yeah he is smartest guy on the team and is very open about knowing that himself, but then, in his very first appearance we see him being emotionally
intelligent enough to be aware of Supergirl's wariness of him due to his relation to the original Brainiac, and immediately letting her know that he is not like that and wants only to do good. In
this first appearance, where he and Supergirl are actually up against each other to get into the Legion, instead of being snobbish and purely self-interested, he decides to risk his life by
sacrificing his force-shield belt to give to Kara so she isn't harmed by a whole Kryptonite meteor out of nowhere. And later on as the KaraDox relationship progresses, despite all his
awkwardness, it is very clear how much he loves, cares for and wants to impress Kara. His intelligence and pride doesn't hinder him from making emotional connections, nor from people loving him as he is.
There isn't that annoying dynamic of the other members feeling inferior to him or him genuinely thinking he's better than them. They're all equals and accept each other as they are. This all
sounds so cheesy but truthfully, as someone who has and still continues to struggle with finding that same kind of acceptance, it's beyond refreshing to have found such a character as Brainy to
find comfort and representation in.
Projects
Alright so, believe or not, my love for Brainy was one of the major reasons for me finally deciding to get into coding/make this whole website.
I mean there was still of course the other big reasons such as my exhaustion with regular social media and its limitations, but originally coding had always been this really intimidating thing
to me, and so the thing that finally pushed me to get over my fears was thinking to myself, "Yo, this is something Brainy would do." I know, I know, call it cringe or whatever but Brainy has
honestly been a huge reason I've gotten more into tech in general. As I mentioned on my homepage, I didn't grow up in a very tech-y home, and on top of that, frankly all those
Silicon Valley techbros and whatnot really gave me a bad impression of what an interest in technology looked like. 
All of this (and now adding all the generative AI bullshit) unfortunately led to
me being quite a bit averse to learning more about technology and its related fields beyond the most basic things. Then along comes this green dude in a clashing fuschia/purple jumpsuit with a
pet monkey, and suddenly my neurodivergent animal brain lights up like Time Square and goes, "I need to be him." Anyways, the point I'm taking forever to make here is that Brainy has somehow
inspired me to get more into technology, as well as be more creative in general. So this place is where I'd like to log any little projects I complete or art I make that I guess reminds me of him.
This ranges from any fanart I make of him or the other Legionnaires, to if I one day truly go off the rails and decide at trying to make a cyberdeck. Now that I'm writing about it,
this website is already a project dedicated to him. So there's one I guess.
